Ratification of the Same Sex Domestic Partner Benefits MOU

Dear Colleague,

Your UFF bargaining team is writing with some very good news and a request for your vote in support.

Earlier this week, your union (United Faculty of Florida or UFF) and the UCF Board of Trustees (BOT) came to agreement on a same-sex domestic partner health insurance stipend program.

This program is similar to the one the University instituted for out-of-unit employees at the beginning of the year, but expands coverage to include parents who already have insurance coverage for their children and domestic partners who have health conditions that prevent them from obtaining private insurance. Further, our agreement requires the BOT to provide at least 90 days notice before any change in the amount of the stipend may be made. We hope the BOT will act to extend these expanded benefits to all University employees.

Because the BOT understands that UFF was bargaining in good faith to expand coverage for those overlooked in its original proposal, faculty members who completed paperwork for this program months ago will receive retroactive payments back to the date their completed paperwork was submitted.

UFF thinks this is a good step in the right direction, promoting fairness and equality and allowing the University to attract and retain the best faculty it can. We are very happy to have worked with members of the BOT bargaining team to come to this agreement.

The signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) can be found here. Because this MOU changes the Collective Bargaining Agreement previously ratified by the faculty and BOT, it must be approved through ratification. A ratification ballot along with instructions can be found here.

We hope that you will vote “yes” on the ballot to add these important benefits to our contract.

As always, please let us know of any comments, questions, or suggestions. If you are already a dues-paying member of UFF, thank you! This MOU is one more example of the good work UFF does on our campus. If you are not, please join today. A membership form can be found here.

In solidarity,
